HWC Volunteer

I first encountered the Women’s Centre through a nurse who offered massages to caregivers, like myself, when I was looking after my mother. The kindness I experienced stuck with me, and I promised to give back when I could. My daughter later saw they needed a sewing teacher, and that’s how I became involved.

Volunteering at the Centre is an absolute pleasure. I lead a sewing group, which has evolved into a supportive community where we not only sew but also address mental health and other personal issues. It’s deeply fulfilling to see the women’s excitement and progress. They even arrive early, eager to start. I feel humbled and privileged to be part of their lives, witnessing their growth and resilience.

The Centre stands out for its acceptance and warmth. From the moment anyone walks in, they are treated with humanity and care. This sense of belonging and community is essential. Despite the old building’s quirks, like unreliable internet and insufficient electrical points, it adds to the Centre’s charm and non-clinical atmosphere.

As a SuperGran mentor, my role has extended beyond traditional boundaries. I’ve developed a special relationship with a solo mother of three, helping her navigate numerous challenges from health issues to job hunting. This ongoing relationship has not only supported her but also integrated her family into my life. We’ve shared significant moments, like spending holidays together, which has strengthened our bond.

The Centre has allowed me to continue my lifelong passion for nurturing and teaching, providing me with a sense of purpose and fulfillment. I believe it’s crucial for the Centre to maintain its services and support for all women, ensuring no one is left behind. This place has become a vital part of my life, and I hope it remains a sanctuary of acceptance and support for many others.
