I’m Helen Sinnott, and my journey with the Heretaunga Women’s Centre has been truly life- changing.

My story began in Rotorua, where I grew up, and continued in Auckland, where I faced significant challenges, including an abusive marriage and raising my two daughters alone. Despite these hardships, I found a new path when I moved to Hamilton in 2014 with my lifelong partner.

Initially, I came to the Women’s Centre for sewing classes, hoping to rekindle a skill from my past. Little did I know, this would be the beginning of a profound and supportive journey. The Centre became a sanctuary for me, offering not just activities but a community of caring and understanding women. It provided a space where I felt seen and supported, especially during times of personal struggle.

Through the Centre, I discovered a variety of programs that broadened my horizons. I attended an anxiety group that was particularly eye-opening, helping me realize that many people, including myself, experience anxiety in different forms. This realization was a turning point, enabling me to better understand and manage my feelings.

The Women’s Centre is more than just a place for activities; it’s a lifeline for many. The empathy and patience of the staff, coupled with the diverse courses and support services, make it a unique haven.Whether it’s counseling, creative workshops, or simply a safe space to be oneself, the Centre offers invaluable resources to women from all walks of life.

Volunteering has always been important to me, and through my work at a hospice shop, I began bringing donated clothes to the Centre. This act of giving further strengthened my connection to the community and highlighted the Centre’s role in helping those in need.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the Women’s Centre is its welcoming atmosphere. From the moment you walk through the door, there’s a sense of warmth and acceptance. The staff and volunteers treat everyone with respect and kindness, making it a place where people feel genuinely cared for.

If I were to describe the Centre to a friend, I would say it’s a place where you can find support, learn new skills, and meet wonderful people. It’s a place that not only helps you but also empowers you to help others. The Centre’s impact is profound, offering a sense of belonging and community that is essential for personal growth and healing.

Looking ahead, I dream of the Women’s Centre receiving more funding to expand its reach and continue its vital work. The support and services it provides are crucial, and with more resources, it could help even more women find their way to a better, happier life.

The Heretaunga Women’s Centre has been a cornerstone in my journey of healing and self-discovery. It has taught me the value of community, the importance of support, and the power of empathy. I am incredibly grateful for everything the Centre has done for me and look forward to continuing my involvement, both as a participant and a volunteer.
