HWC Volunteer
I’m Sinead Hegarty, and I’ve been deeply connected to the Women’s Centre since 2020, when I returned to New Zealand after a challenging period overseas during the COVID-19 pandemic. Seeking community and connection, I reached out to the Centre and was welcomed warmly by Amanda, which kickstarted my journey as a volunteer.
The Women’s Centre has been a place of solace and empowerment for me. Volunteering here, I’ve primarily been involved in marketing efforts, from distributing posters to organizing fundraising events.
One of my favorite activities is running a monthly free-flow dance workshop with my friend Rin. This workshop aims to create a space where people can dance freely and feel a sense of belonging.
What I love most about the Centre is its inclusive and intersectional approach. It’s a space where creativity thrives, and everyone is welcomed with open arms. This environment contrasts sharply with other experiences I’ve had, as it feels truly empowering and accepting.
Despite the Centre’s many strengths, I feel there’s a gap in awareness. Many people, particularly those my age or from more diverse backgrounds, don’t seem to know about the Centre or the breadth of its offerings. This “block” is something I wish we could overcome, as the Centre provides numerous resources and supports that could benefit a wider audience.
If I were to describe the Centre to someone new, I’d emphasise its genuine intention to create a safe, supportive, and creative community. Whether through sewing classes, therapy, or children’s activities, there’s something for everyone. And if something isn’t offered, the Centre is open to new ideas and initiatives.
One of my dreams for the Centre is for it to be more widely recognized for its intersectional embrace of women and to have a more diverse outreach. I believe that more external events, like concerts or partnerships with other organizations, could help raise awareness and bring in more people.
The most valuable aspect of the Centre to me is the community of people. The support and
counseling services are crucial, and knowing they’re available is a great comfort. However, I think there’s a need to explore why some people might feel excluded and how we can change those perceptions.
Ultimately, the Women’s Centre is a beacon of stability and support in a chaotic world. My hope is that more people can experience the peace and empowerment it offers, just as I have.
