Volunteering with the Heretaunga Women’s Centre

“The gifts we are blessed with are not necessarily for us - sometimes they’re for others.”

People who join the HWC as volunteers are dedicated to sharing their skills and life experiences with women in their community. They value contribution, collaboration, and connection, and are committed to empowering wāhine to become the best version of themselves.

If you’ve been thinking about volunteering your time and energy to help other women, our Centre will welcome you with open arms. We encourage creativity, innovation, and freedom of expression so if you’ve got ideas that you think will help wāhine to thrive, we’d love to hear them.

Check out the information on this page to find out more about the volunteer roles on offer and get in touch if you’d like to get involved.

Ways to volunteer with the HWC

Our Centre depends on the generosity of wonderful volunteers who help us out in every aspect of what we do. We encourage creativity so if you’ve got an idea for a new workshop, class, or fundraising event, please share it with us. If you’re eager to get involved with our centre but you’re not sure where to start, here are some of the possibilities:

Run a fundraising event

We’re always looking for volunteer fundraisers to help raise money for our Centre. Perhaps you’re looking to add fundraising experience to your CV? Or maybe you and your friends are looking for a way to give back to the community? However you go about it, organising a fundraising event is an unforgettable experience.

Fundraising events include anything from quiz nights and raffles to sponsored sports challenges and art auctions. The possibilities are endless!

If you’re interested in fundraising for the HWC, please get in touch to share your ideas and we’ll support you in any way we can.

Lead a workshop

Do you have a special skill or expert knowledge to share with wāhine in your community? It could be something creative like playing an instrument, something spiritual like meditation, or something practical like car maintenance. If you have taken the time to develop a skill, you can be sure there are other women in our community who want to do the same.

Collective knowledge is at the heart of everything we do at the centre, so if you’ve got time and expertise to share, we’d love to hear from you.

Mentor a woman

If you’ve got skills and knowledge to share but find the idea of a group workshop a little intimidating, you should consider becoming a mentor. We get to know everyone who comes into our Centre so that we can connect the right people for the perfect mentorship opportunities.

In one-to-one sessions with your carefully selected mentee, you’ll make a tangible difference to a woman’s life while making meaningful connections that boost your own self-confidence.

Become an ambassador

The key to being an ambassador is simple; tell everyone about the Heretaunga Women’s Centre. Share our work on social media, speak to your local community groups, tell your workmates and university colleagues; just spread the word!

If you’re an outgoing person who’s passionate about improving the lives of wāhine in your community, you could be the perfect ambassador.

Get in touch with us to express your interest and to find out how we can support you to become an HWC ambassador.
