Men welcome.

As part of the Heretaunga Women’s Centre, Women’s Suffrage Month celebrations we are thrilled to be showing the movie Muru. We think this film based on a true story about whānau and whenua; uprising and political unfairness is great way to celebrate and reflect how far we have come as a nation and how far we still have to go. He taonga rongonui te aroha ki te tangata.
Set against the backdrop of the stunning Tūhoe native bush, writer and director Tearepa Kahi (Poi E: The Story of Our Song NZIFF 2016, Herbs: Songs of Freedom NZIFF 2019, Mt Zion) plunges us into one of the most charged episodes of Aotearoa’s history: the Tūhoe raids of 15 Oct 2007.
True to Kahi’s masterful commitment to centering Indigenous narratives, the film’s heartbeat is held by the locals. Community Sergeant ‘Taffy’ Tawharau (Cliff Curtis) has returned home to care for his ailing father. In addition to shuttling the local tamariki to kura and getting kaumātua to their medical check-ups, he must also contend with the rebellious but loveable teenager, Rusty (Poroaki Merritt-McDonald) also recently returned home — but from six months in a Youth Corrections Facility.
Against this backdrop of whānau and whenua, the police armed offenders squad descends on the sleepy town of Rūātoki — on a school day. Invoking New Zealand’s new anti-terrorism laws, the manhunt begins for Tūhoe activist, Tame Iti (who plays himself), the alleged mastermind behind a potential political uprising and ringleader of military-style training camps in Te Urewera.
The action is fast, the cinematography laser-focused, and the drama rapidly spirals into chaos as the police grow desperate to find their man. The film is superbly edited, shining a spotlight on each individual’s humanity: the innocent families whose homes were ransacked, the children left alone for hours on end, as well as the members of the police who are forced to make life-changing decisions. This is a big-screen action flick that skillfully avoids veering into the didactic, and its distinctive lightness of touch is an ode to Merata Mita and her oeuvre.
Muru is a clear reminder: there will always be taniwha. Some will have eight legs and two heads. Others will be harder to spot. But there will always be those who are ready to fight the taniwha to create greater understanding for the future of Aotearoa. — Dione Joseph See less

Nomination-Form-HWC-Forum-Blank-2022-updated or forms are available at the HWC reception.

Do you know an incredible woman who makes our community better?
The Heretaunga Womens Centre is pleased to announce nominations are open for our 2022 “Unsung”
Hero Awards. These Awards are an opportunity to recognise women for their previously unnoted
yet valuable community contributions.

Unsung Hero’s are women who don’t always make the news, but truly make a difference. They are
the women who use their time, talent and enthusiasm to enrich the lives of others and make a difference
in the lives of their extended whanau/family, their neighbourhood, their marae and our community at
large. They are mentors, volunteers and go-getters who do what needs to be done without expectations
of recognition or gratitude. These women are the glue that keeps our community together and we are
fortunate that they work so tirelessly.

We are currently seeking nominations from the community for our Unsung Hero of the Year 20221. Why
ask the community at large? Because the community is where these women work, and the good works
that they do are known and recognised. The award will be presented at the Heretaunga Women’s
Centre Annual Women’s Forum: Her Say on Thursday September 8th 2022 from 4.30 to 7.30. Shortlisted nominees
will be invited to attend. If you know an extraordinary woman in your community who you think deserves
to be recognised, then complete and return the nomination form.

Nominations
close on Thursday 1st September. Please return nominations to the Heretaunga Womens Centre, or post to P O. Box
780 Hastings 4156 or email admin@hwc.nz

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2022 AT 4:30 PM – 7 PM  At the C3 Church Hawkes Bay

Ticket Price Early Bird $15 General Admission $20

Every year the Heretaunga women’s Centre hosts an annual women’s forum to celebrate Women’s Suffrage month . These women only events discuss and showcase issues effecting women and we always aim that the forum will inspire, inform and support women locally.
This year we thrilled to have Jackie Clarke and the Aunties as our guest speakers. The opening speech and address will be by the Minister for  Women the Hon. Jan Tinetti

Jackie Clark is known as an absolute powerhouse of a women. She tells it like it is and makes no apologies for that.
In 2013, Jackie Clark launched The Aunties, a grassroots charity helping women to rebuild their lives after a period of trauma. She quit her job, turning her back on her comfortable life, to focus on The Aunties full-time, becoming Aunty in Charge and assisting hundreds of women with material needs and emotional support.
Jackie has long dreamed of a publication that gives these women a voice. This powerful new book ‘Her Say’ features the stories of a number of very different New Zealand women, told their way. The collected stories chart their narrators’ lives and personal histories, through the lens of having lived with – and escaped – an abusive relationship. Her Say is spoken from the heart, uncompromising but offering hope, redemption, personal triumph. It’s a book for all women, showing how owning our stories gives us the power to write daring new endings. It will challenge, illuminate, and empower readers – not to mention the storytellers themselves.
The Aunties believe that everyone has the right to live with self-determination, dignity, and knowledge of their mana, in recognition of the value, joy and beauty of their true selves.
Come along and hear the amazing stories and incredible voices of Jackie Clarke and the Aunties.
The book ‘Her Say’ will be available for purchase on the night.

Ticket includes nibbles, tea and coffee and cake and are available online at Humanitix or call in to the centre to purchase, or Phone 06 878 5401

Please note that Jackie Clarke has stressed to us that it is important for her to keep well, as she has many women she is responsible for looking after. Tickets are sold with the agreement that masks must be worn in the auditorium and that mask pass exemptions must be shown on entry to event.

Movie Fundraiser – Mother’s of the Revolution

Tuesday June 21st * Focal Point Cinema * 5.30pm Nibbles 6pm Movie

This movie fundraiser, originally scheduled for International women’s day is the incredible film ‘Mothers of the Revolution’, which tells the story of one of the longest protests in history, when between 1981 and 2000, thousands of women from around the world came together and lived in tents at Greenham Common in the UK to take a committed stand against nuclear proliferation. The protest by the media, the film reveals the women as the Cold War heroes they were, who persisted in the face of arrests, condemnation and scorn, took on a superpower, and changed the world.
At its heart, Mothers of the Revolution is a Cold War drama-thriller, a tale filled with the tension of a spy novel, with furtive trips behind the Iron Curtain into Soviet Russia, infiltrations of top secret military bases, and messages passed under cover of darkness.
It’s also a story of love – love of family, of children, and of each other – and of bitter conflicts that pitted mother against son, and husband against wife.
Most importantly, it’s a story of enduring morality, sacrifices, and a commitment to a higher cause.
Tickets are available online at Humanitix – or at the HWC and ticket price includes nibbles.
We hope you can make this movie. We are looking forward to being with you all again!

We are calling for expressions of interest from artists for the painting of the electric box outside the Heretaunga women’s centre. Unfortunately, at this stage there is no funding for this – but of course we would pay for paint.
Unison has stated they would need a submission of the proposed art work before final approval was given.
Because the box is right outside the centre, we imagine the art work will reflect women.
If you would like to submit a proposal, or concept, please fill in this form here or if you need more information please email Amanda at marketing@hwc.nz

Dr Samantha Newman wants to enable women to access healthcare for mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing. Her dream is that individuals/registered healthcare providers can apply for funding to be able access to a health professional, whom they feel is appropriate to them, and will enable them to achieve defined health goals. Knowing mental health underpins wellbeing, Dr Sam has set up Te Tupu Fund which will also help support the ongoing work of the counselling service that the Heretaunga Women’s Centre provides, and will further links to family doctors streamlining the health journey.
We are extremely appreciative to Dr Sam for the help towards our counselling programme, through her Givealittle page. If you feel you would like to support this cause, click the Givealittle link
